‘America’s Got Talent’ Recap: First 12 Live Performances; Anna Christine, 11, Impresses

America’s Got Talent returned to its former home of New York’s Radio City Music Hall on Tuesday night for its first live show of the season.

Singer and pianist Anna Christine, 11, performed “Don’t Let Me Be Understood” by The Animals. Despite some obvious nerves in the beginning, the young singer was impressive. Visual dance group tellAvision wowed with their original and creative routine that featured, of course, TV monitors along with their dance. Judge Heidi Klum would rather America doesn’t vote for them, concluding, “I saw it once, I feel like I don’t have to see it again.”

Rock band American Hitmen, made up of Iraqi war veterans, performed Joe Cocker’s “A Little Help From My Friends.” It was good, but probably not good enough to see them move onto the next round. Special Head worked his levitation magic again, but had some technical difficulty. He had tried to levitate outside the building, but could still be spotted after the stage went dark.

Children’s dance group of nine and 10-year-olds, Fresh Faces, delivered another adorable and entertaining performance.17-year-old magician Collins Key continues to outdo himself each week – this time by predicting tweets sent out by the judges. “Collins, you continue to dazzle us and are the new face of magic,” said judge Howie Mandel.

Comedian Kevin Downey Jr. found a fan in shock jock judge Howard Stern. "My girlfriend rewards my sexual performance with food," he said. "Last night we had Minute Rice — and a glass of Nestle Quik." Stern called him “the real deal.” Aaralyn and Izzy, the heavy metal band composed of kids, rocked out on the stage. With more than 15 million hits on YouTube, they may have the built in fan base to see them through to another round.

Escape artist (and mother) Alexanderia the Great got herself out of a straightjacket wrapped in chains while she was locked underwater. Comedic acrobat duo the KriStef Brothers stunned in their balancing routine with their incredible strength – and with the glitter and girly costuming.

Hip-hop dance trio Hype out of Hawaii showed off their moves in a film-themed performance to Frank Sinatra’s “I Won’t Dance.” Classical singer Branden James somewhat predictably opted to sing Josh Groban’s “You Raise Me Up.” Despite the lack of originality, James’ performance earned him a standing ovation.

Wednesday night at 9/8c on NBC, America’s Got Talent returns with twelve more of the top 60 performing, and to announce which four from Tuesday will advance to the next round.
