American Tourist Destroys Roman Statues At Israel Museum After Declaring Them ‘Blasphemous’

Israel police on Thursday arrested a tourist for vandalizing ancient Roman statues displayed at Jerusalem’s Israel Museum. The police suspect that the tourist, who is said to be in his 40s, carried out this action because he considered the statues “blasphemous” and “in violation of the Torah.”

The arrestee is an American citizen who was detained by the security forces in the museum after they saw him shatter the statues, which, according to the police, are valuable items in the collection.

Two ancient Roman sculptures dating to the second century BC were damaged by the accused. The police released footage showing the shattered statues lying on the ground at the museum. The investigation in this case, according to the police, is ongoing.

Condemning this incident, the Israel Museum termed it “extremely worrying,” saying that the professionals in the museum’s preservation department had placed the statues in the museum.

The man in custody’s detention has been extended until Monday.
