Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez, Ryan Seacrest and Harry Connick Jr. on American Idol
The top 8 perform in a tight competition as two are sent home in the end.
The series finale is less than a month away. Contestants sing an individual song but are also paired up in duets.
La’Porsha Renae and Trent Harmon start off the night with “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth. Judge Keith Urban thought it was a perfect song that played to their strengths individually but worked well together.
Avalon Young and Sonika Vaid duet Andra Day’s “Rise Up”. The two have a close bond as roommates but the performance fell flat. It was just an average performance with nothing special. These two fell in the bottom three.
MacKenzie Bourg and Dalton Rapattoni sang the Backstreet Boys hit “I Want It That Way.” Judge Harry Connick Jr. didn’t think it was a good song for them. It sounded more like a karaoke performance.
Tristan McIntosh and Lee Jean sang “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing.” Judge Jennifer Lopez wanted a little more and thought Tristan shined while Lee was doing his best to connect with emotion. Harry called their performance “boring and bland.”
The solos were based from the American Idol songbook from all of idol history.
Renae brings a soulful rendition to “Come Together” and the judges loved it.
Bourg gives a solid performance of Joe Cocker’s “You Are So Beautiful.” Connick didn’t think he could have picked a better song. Urban thought he made an older song sound brand new.
Harmon brought the soul and emotion to “Stand By Me.” He did a fantastic job and the judges praised him.
McIntosh sings Martina McBride’s “A Broken Wing.” Connick thinks she is a country singer and sounds great doing it.
Rapattoni sings a theatrical rendition of The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby.” Lopez thought he impressed everyone. Connick appreciated how he pushed the key as high as he could.
Jean joins Vaid and Young in the bottom 3.
Avalon sings “P.Y.T.” with her usual smooth and suave attitude. The judges don’t understand why she continues to be in the bottom 3 when she seems like she’s connecting with the audience.
Lee performs an emotional “Let It Be.” Lopez thought it was good but probably not enough. Connick appreciated how it was very emotional but said there was a big pitch issue.
Vaid performs “I Have Nothing” by Whitney Houston. Urban wants to continue to see her let go during her performances.
The judges save Vaid while Jean and Young are sent home.
