American Idol returned last night to announce that Lazaro Arbos would be leaving the competition after delivering two decidedly unremarkable performances on Wednesday evening.
Arbos, who was a slightly surprising pick for the judges' top twelve, has finally seen his remarkable Idol run come to a close. His loveable demeanor and incredibe story won him the votes of millions of Idol watchers over the last few weeks, keeping him in the competition over his more vocally gifted competitors. However, not even Arbo’s charm could save him after Wednesday’s performances.
The themes for the Idol-hopeful's' song choices this week were the Baccarach/David Catalogue and “Song I Wish I Had Written,” respectively. For the first, Arbos took on the Carpenters's “(They Long To Be) Close to You,” and Robbie Williams’s “Angles” for the second. Neither attempt was successful, leading the judges to lay on the criticism and passive aggressively appeal to Arbo’s legion of supporters not to pick up their phones.
Building up the anticipation, host Ryan Seacrest had divided the six remaining contestants into three groups – two with the most votes, two with the least and two who were in the middle of the pack. Kree Harrison and Candace Glover were determined to be the week’s leaders, Janelle Arthur and Angie Miller were in the middle and Arbos and Amber Holcomb were at the bottom.
If Amber had turned out to have received less votes than Arbos, there’s little doubt the judges would have whipped out their one and only save. After Arbos tried for the save, judge Randy Jackson said, "We love you. You've been a treasure to the show. We've enjoyed you, but we're not gonna use the save."
With Arbos gone, this leaves American Idol with an all-female top 5 – the show’s first.
