American Idol named the top 3 singers for its 15th and final season Thursday night – Dalton Rapattoni, La’Porsha Renae and Trent Harmon.
MacKenzie Bourg took to the stage to sing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” a favorite among American Idol contestants. Unfortunately for the singer-songwriter, it ended up being his swan song, as the judges soon informed him that he had been eliminated from the competition.
Each of the remaining contestants ended up performing three songs – Contestant’s Choice (or Hometown Dedication), mentor Scott Borchetta‘s Choice and Judges Choice.
Dalton dedicated Blue October’s “Calling You” to his hometown and impressed the judges with his energy. The judges were less confident about what he would do with Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark,” but he managed to rework the song enough to make it work for him. As for Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” Dalton, the weakest vocalist of the remaining singers, had set the key too low for his range.
Trent kicked things off with David Allan Coe/George Jones’ “Tennessee Whiskey,” adding a bit of R&B flavor to the traditionally country tune. His next song, Justin Timberlake’s “Drink You Away,” didn’t seem to be the best choice for his style of singing, but Keith Urban’s choice of Parson James’ “Waiting Game” won the night.
La’Porsha Renae hit the stage for the first time to take on John Legend and Common’s Oscar-winning song “Glory,” and, with the help of a choir at her back, delivered a moving performance. La’Porsha was less than enthusiastic about taking on Lorraine Ellison/Bette Midler’s “Stay With Me,” and it showed in her performance. However, she was back in top form for her rendition of Adele’s “Hello.”
American Idol’s finale next week will air live from the Dolby Theater on April 5-7.
