'American Idol' Recap: Candice Glover Owned The Night With ‘Ordinary People’

American Idol showcased the top ten women in the competition on Tuesday night, but no one proved they’d earned their spot as much as Candice Glover.

“You have an old soul thing, but you make it so now, so current,” said judge Keith Urban. “That was ridiculous,” Randy Jackson added. “You sang notes that people don’t even understand. I’m learning, listening to you.”

Prior to Glover’s impressive rendition of John Legend’s Ordinary People, there were a number of more than credible performances throughout the night. Perhaps because for the first time this season the audience will select who moves on, everyone brought their best. The first of the night was Zoanette, who sang Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” that paled slightly in comparison to last week’s “Circle of Life,” but still managed to spark the audience.

Next up was Breanna Steer with a performance of “Flaws and All.” Urban liked her song choice, but Nicki Minaj was less than impressed. In fact the hip-hop star implied she shouldn’t necessarily count on being in the top ten of the competition. Aubrey Cleland, on the other hand, had all of the judges in her corner. Not only did they love her rendition of Fergie’s “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” they were all fans of her style choices as well.

For the first country performance of the night, Janelle Arthur sang “If I Can Dream” by Elvis Presley, which was better received than her Lady Antebellum number last week. “That’s my girl! You’re back!” exclaimed Minaj. The next country number came for Tenna Torres who took on Faith Hill’s “Lost.” Torres received compliments across the board for her vocals.

In a potentially risky movie, Angie Miller took on former American Idol contestant Colton Dixon’s original song “Never Gone.” Back on the piano, Miller more than lived up to the judges’ high expectations. Another risky choice came from Amber Holcomb who covered Whitney Houston’s “I Believe in You and Me.” The gamble proved a good one from Holcomb, who received a standing ovation for the performance.

Then came Kree Harrison who sang the second and arguably superior Faith Hill number of the night, “Stronger.” Harrison’s performance led judge Mariah Carey to ask, “How do you top that?” Adriano Latonia was the unlucky contestant to follow her, and she left the judges uninspired.

Fittingly, Glover closed out the show with the night’s knockout performance of the John Legend ballad.

American Idol will air on Wednesday and Thursday at 8/7c on Fox.
