American Idol’s penultimate elimination episode narrowed the final field down to two from standouts Caleb Johnson, Jena Irene and Alex Preston.
On Wednesday night, the three singers each performed three songs – one selected by Randy Jackson, one selected by judges Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban and one picked by their hometowns. Unlike in last weeks, Jackson didn’t offer his predictions, merely stating how impressed he was will all of the performances.
Before Ryan Seacrest got down to revealing who no longer had a shot at becoming crowned the next American Idol, he let the singers know who they’d be singing duets with next week. Jena Irene will be singing with Paramour, Alex Preston with Jason Mraz and classic rocker Caleb Johnson will be jamming out with KISS.
Furthermore, it was announced that all three semifinalists will be releasing their own new singles: Irene’s “We Are One,” Preston’s “I Love This Feeling” and Johnson “As Long As You Love Me.”
Finally, after Scotty McCreery sang his new single “Feelin’ It,” it was time for Seacrest to announce who was at the end of their time in the competition. Irene and Johnson were declared safe, while Preston learned he was out of the running. For his swan song, he performed his original number “Fairytale.”
