American Idol narrowed the field down to two last night, and said goodbye to 19-year-old pop rock singer Angie Miller. Candace Glover and Kree Harrison are the remaining two contestants that will return for the finale next Wednesday.
Angie’s exit on Thursday came as a shock to many Idol viewers who thought that the piano-playing contestant had earned a spot in the finale after her moving take on Elton John’s “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word”, passionate performance of P!nk’s “Try,” and her final number, “Maybe” by Emile Sande, which she sang from the piano.
For her first song, Glover sang U2’s “One,” in a way that was more reminiscent of Mary J. Blige’s cover. Next, she took on ”Next to Me,” by Sande, but it was Glover’s performance of “Somewhere” from West Side Story that was unanimously declared the performance of the night.
Kree’s first song, P!nk’s “Perfect,” fell a little flat for the judges, but her second song, “Here Comes Goodbye” by Rascal Flatts, earned her the title of winner of the second round of performances. For her final song, she sang “Better Dig Two” by The Band Perry, and failed to impress the judges.
Idol alumna Laura Alaina performed her new single, “Barefoot and Buckwild,” and Alicia Keys took to the piano to deliver a beautiful performance of “Tears Always Win.” Less subtle was the premiere of the music video for Mariah Carey’s new single featuring Miguel, “Beautiful.” As the hair fan blows in Mariah’s face, she writhes about in a garage as Miguel watches, and rides along on the back of his motorcycle.
While closing out the night with Colton Dixon’s “Never Gone,” Miller struggled to perform her vocals through her disappointed tears. Meanwhile, Harrison and Glover held onto each other, with at least one of them seeming surprised to not be in Miller's shoes.
Harrison and Glover will sing for the American Idol title next Wednesday on Fox at 8/7c.

I was shocked when Angie Miller was sent home, but that movie will help create an interesting showdown between Candice and Kree next week. I work at DISH and several of my friends there agreed with me that it’s always difficult to see a swan song performance, and that was true with Angie’s tear-filled goodbye. I didn’t make it home, but kept up with it via DISH Anywhere on my Galaxy S4. It’s great that I can use this app to watch American Idol live when I take the train home from work.
