‘American Horror Story: Coven’ Spoilers: Is Madison Montgomery Really Dead?

American Horror Story: Coven’s latest episode “The Replacements” saw Madison Montgomery (Emma Roberts) die at the hands of reigning Supreme Fiona (Jessica Lange), who believes Madison is poised to replace her. But is she gone for good?

Since the beginning of Coven’s first episode, many characters have died only to be brought back to life – Misty (Lily Rabe) was burned at the stake before resurrecting herself, and frat boy Kyle was torn to pieces in a bus accident (caused by Madison’s telekinesis) and then put back together (by Madison and Taissa Farmiga’s Zoe). Their respective immortality just scratches the surface: Socialite and slave torturer Madam LaLaurie (Kathy Bates), voodoo priestess Marie Laveau (Angela Basset) and her lover-turned-Minotaur haven’t aged a day since the 1800s.

“That’s the big joke on the show when we get the scripts — nobody dies on American Horror Story,” Roberts, told Entertainment Weekly, fostering hope that Fiona slitting Madison’s throat won't be the end for her character. As for her particular death on screen, Roberts was less intimidated by the prospect of acting out her own death, than acting opposite the legend that is her costar Lange. “I love her so much so I was more intimidated to have a big scene with her.”

While Roberts, who counts Coven as a high point in her career to date, discussed her character’s fate in the vaguest of statements, series creator Ryan Murphy offered a more candid take on what’s to unfold. Yes, Madison is dead, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything. “The funny thing about a horror show to me is that anybody can die at any time. I love that," Murphy told EW. “All I wanna say is wait ’til you see what happens to the body. Sh-t goes down. When you see episode 4 and you see what Spalding did to the body, you’ll be like ‘Oh, okay I get it. Not only do I get it, but I’m very disturbed.’”

American Horror Story: Coven airs Wednesdays on FX at 10/9c.
