American Horror Story: Coven began on Wednesday night with a prologue that sent the story back a number of decades to 1919 with an Axeman (John Huston) and a coven of witches from another time. The Roaring 20s are just around the corner and the women’s suffrage movement is just about to take shape.

The Axeman History

The Axeman is both a jazz musician and the serial killer of women and their lovers. As he walked down a New Orleans street one night he noticed that Miss Robichaux’s was not played his beloved jazz, but old school opera. Taunted, he enters and finds young passionate suffragette Grace (Mamie Gummer) upstairs with Tarot cards. She flips over the death card. He swings a blow and misses her – she stabs him. Then her fellow witches emerge out of the shadows, each of them penetrating him with their own unsheathed knives.

Cut to present day Miss Robichaux’s, Zoe (Taissa Farmiga) comes to the realization that someone needs to make a concentrated effort in preserving their line of witches. After all, from enrollment at the academy alone, it’s quite clear that they’re dying out. She gets Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe) and Nan (Jamie Brewer) to join her in an absinthe-fueled Ouija board session, thinking that they’ll be able to summon Madison’s (Emma Roberts) spirit. Instead, they summon the Axeman.

After some time away from the Ouija board and finding out about the Axeman’s history in the house, Zoe tries to convince the others to try to use him to find Madison. They’re against it, so she goes it alone. The Axeman leads her to Spalding’s (Denis O'Hare) creepy attic apartments. Amongst the dolls and dresses, she locates the chest that holds Madison’s decomposing corpse. Before she can so much as scream, Spalding has her by the throat.

At the hospital, Fiona (Jessica Lange) contemplates her mortality. She’s going to undergo chemotherapy to try to rid herself of cancer the old fashioned way. Her clairvoyance skill is going crazy in the ward, and she’s hearing everyone’s hopes for the remainder of the lives. What Fiona wants is to have one last great love affair – the stuff of the best romantic literature, not the stuff of singles websites. Soon enough she has to take the focus off of her and to return her now-blinded daughter Delia (Sarah Paulson) home to Robichaux's

While Delia might be blind to the scenery around her, she’s now in possession of a deeper vision. She can see her husband’s sordid past. She asks him about the red-head she keeps seeing every time she touches her. Before he can get out a lame response, she whacks him with her white cane and dismisses him. Delia then tells Fiona that she feels like she has more sight than she’s ever had in her life. When she sees that Myrtle was burnt at the stake, she can’t hide her pain.

Zoe And Misty Plan Resurrection

Up in the attic, Queenie and Nan had joined Zoe upstairs after the latter escaped his restraint. They’re interrogating him about Madison’s murder, which he manages to keep to himself despite both Queenie and Nan’s powers – being a human voodoo doll and being able to read minds, respectively. Having a sense that Spalding wasn’t giving them the truth about murdering Madison, Zoe calls in Misty (Lily Rabe) to try to resurrect their fallen fellow witch. Though Misty was currently livid with Kyle (Evan Peters) for breaking her stereo (read: Stevie Nicks) and still working on Myrtle, she agrees to go with Zoe. Together, Misty and Zoe are able to wake her up. Her first words: “I need a cigarette.”

Delia’s husband is even more of a danger to her and to the witching population than was previously imaginable. As it turns out, he’s a witch hitman under the employment of Marie Laveau (Angela Bassett). He’s been using his marriage to Delia to scope out the witches that he eventually lures and kills. Despite his serial witch killings, Laveau doesn’t believe he has the stomach for the task at hand. In order to prove he doesn’t truly love Delia and to live, he must kill all of the witches at Robichaux’s and deliver their heads to her.

As Coven came to an end on Wednesday, Fiona sat at the bar, hoping for her great romance to find her when in walks the suave ghost of the Axeman.

American Horror Story: Coven airs Wednesdays on FX at 10/9c.
