American Horror Story’s cold open reintroduced the burned at the stake resurrectress Misty Day (Lily Rabe), as she serves up some retribution to a pair of swamp hunters in the form of reinvigorated hanged alligators.
At Miss Robichaux’s, Zoe (Taissa Farmiga) is immersed in a Google investigation of her short-lived crush Kyle (Evan Peters), much to Madison’s (Emma Roberts) dismay. Madison has no regrets about flipping the bus and sending a handful of frat boys to the morgue. Zoe tries to get her to believe that Kyle wasn’t like the rest, but Madison believes that had he been with his boys during the gang rape, he would have had no qualms about taking a turn. Furthermore, Madison argues, Zoe’s “black widow status” would have left him dead sooner or later anyway.
Delia (Sarah Paulson) struggles to get the girls – and her mother – out of their rooms for morning lessons. While Zoe and Madison discuss the merits of their frat boy slaughter, Fiona (Jessica Lange) is struggling to keep the unearthed Madame LaLaurie (Kathy Bates) from screaming as she tries to question her. Fiona wants to know how she was made immortal. Just as it looks like LaLaurie might begin to provide a coherent answer, Fiona’s phone rings, causing her to jump. "Jesus, woman, it's a cellphone," Fiona tells LaLaurie before stuffing cloth back into her mouth and heading out the door.
A flashback then shows how Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe) was discovered as a witch in Detroit in 2012. At the time, the human voodoo doll – also a straight-A math student – was managing a fried chicken fast food restaurant. When a customer claimed he’d been shorted a piece of chicken and called her a “stupid fatass” when she wouldn’t provide him with an extra, she let her powers speak for her. Queenie walked over to the fryer and dunked her hand in the boiling oil, causing the scheming patron to nearly burn his right arm off. In the present, Queenie explained that she’d grown up on “white-girl shit like Charmed and Sabrina the Teenage Cracker” and hadn’t known there were black witches. As it turns out, she’s a descendent to the first woman accused of witchcraft in Salem – the house slave named Tituba.
Queenie’s origin story is then interrupted by a pair of detectives who want to question Zoe and Madison about the bus accident. After they inform Madison that her Hollywood movie star status makes her easy to spot and remember at parties, they turn the heat on Zoe, who was spotted at the hospital the day the surviving frat boy died of a weird aneurysm. Zoe, not exactly cool under pressure, reveals everything from the gang rape and her sexual murder in the hospital bed to the fact that they’re all witches. Thankfully for the witch race, Fiona swooped in and saved the day – magically coercing the officers to forget everything that happened and to drop the investigation on the two girls by spitting in water glasses and making them drink.
Fiona then tries to teach Zoe and Madison a quick lesson about being a witch, basically telling them they’re better and more powerful than just about everyone – except for her, the Supreme. The bolder of the two, Madison, takes the powerful message to heart and decides to take Zoe to the morgue to try to resurrect Kyle. When they get there, they realize that the crash not only killed the guys, but ripped them limb from limb. Instead of trying to piece Kyle together, Madison suggests they attach Kyle’s head to the best body parts of the rest of the guys to “build the perfect boyfriend.”
Meanwhile, Delia and her husband are at the fertility doctor, hoping they hear good news about her chances of getting pregnant after her latest treatments. Unfortunately, it looks like it’s not going to happen naturally, so the doctor suggests in vitro fertilization. Delia’s husband isn’t keen on what he sees as god-playing on the part of the doctors and suggests that Delia use her own god-like abilities to help them conceive a child. Delia is hesitant, as the spell would require some dark magic.
Madama LaLaurie is still tied up in a chair in Fiona’s room at Miss Robichaux’s. Fiona informs her that she’d been underground for 180 years. LaLaurie, finally composed enough not to scream, tells Fiona the events that led to her burial. After waking up from Marie Laveau's (Angela Bassett) poisoning she went outside to meet a mob of freed blacks fronted by Laveau. Then Laveau tells LaLaurie to look up, where she finds her three daughters and husband hanging. She then learns that she’s been cursed with immortality, before she’s loaded into a wooden coffin. Fiona knows all about LaLaurie’s history and seems to feel as though she deserved all she got.
At the morgue, Zoe and Madison are still working on their Dr. Frankenstein-esque project. After some smoke, flashing lights, fire and screaming and chanting they’re done – but Kyle doesn’t animate. When Madison leaves, however, Zoe plants a kiss him that wakes him up. As soon as Zoe appears to give Kyle life, Misty Day appears to take note from afar. When Zoe drives of with Franken-Kyle incoherently screaming and banging around in the car, she turns around to find an extra passenger in the backseat – Misty. Misty directs Zoe to her Bayou cabin, where she applies a salve to Kyle’s wounds and gives her a tutorial on Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac.
Fiona, following the information she gleaned from her chat with LaLaurie, hits a hair salon run by Marie Laveau. Laveau knows something is up with Lange – a wealthy-looking white woman getting a haircut in the Ninth Ward. She pegs her for a witch. Fiona, after establishing her kinds superiority over Laveau’s voodoo magic, asks to have what LaLaurie has – immortality. Laveau – for now at least – has no intention of supplying her with it.
Fiona’s daughter, meanwhile, was gathering herbs in preparation for making a baby with her husband. Once everything was set up on the floor of their bedroom, the two slice their hands open and get after it. Almost as soon as the start to have sex, snakes crack out of large blue eggs, the ash that encircles them catches on fire and Delia’s eyes take on a demonic shade of black.

As Coven’s second episode came to a close: Fiona tracks down the escaped Madame LaLaurie outside her old house, where she tells her just how horribly remembered she is. LaLaurie maintains the feeling that she was a woman of her time and seems poised to exact vengeance on Laveau. Fiona leaves it open that she’ll consider killing her in the future, but for now she just wants LaLaurie to sit tight at Robichaux’s. Up above in the house, Laveau has a chat with her lover-turned-Minotaur, who apparently is also still alive.
American Horror Story: Coven airs Wednesdays on FX at 10/9c.
