David Wise, a skier representing the U.S. at Sochi, won the gold medal in the men’s halfpipe on Tuesday.
Wise, 23, was the favorite heading into the ski halfpipe at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, having won gold in the last three X Games. Although he scored low marks on his second run, his first run, which was scored 92 points, was enough to keep him in the lead.
Canada’s Mike Riddle won silver, while France’s Kevin Rolland earned the bronze.
After his win, Wise thanked his fans for their support on Twitter and showed respect for the two finalists.
Wise, ranked first by the Association of Freeskiing Professionals, won two of the three qualifiers leading into the finals. Neither of his teammates – Lyman Currier and Torin Yater-Wallace – advanced out of the qualifying rounds after falling during their first runs down the pipe.
