The American Composers Orchestra presented an exciting evening of new music, We Are Lost In Our Shadows, that challenges notions of migration on Thursday night at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall. The piece, a collaboration between Pulitzer Prize-winning Chinese-American composer Du Yun and Pakistani singer Khaled Jarrar, includes original footage shot of Syrian refugees adjusting to life in Europe accompanied by Jarrar’s baleful song. The evocative vocals of Helga Davis and rhythm of percussionist Shayna Dunkelman creates an eerie soundtrack to the migrants journey that one won’t soon forget.
