An American Airlines co-pilot allegedly had a few drinks before getting on a plane out of Detroit Metropolitan Airport on Saturday.
The pilot failed two Breathalyzers and was immediately escorted off the plane.
A Federal Aviation Administration official said that the 7 a.m. flight from Detroit to Philadelphia was canceled and the unnamed co-pilot was “detained this morning under suspicion of having a BAC over the legal limit” when he arrived for work.
“Safety is our highest priority and we apologize to our customers for the disruption to their travel plans,” the airline said in a statement. “This is a serious matter and we are assisting local law enforcement and the Federal Aviation Administration with the investigation. We will handle this matter appropriately as the safety and care of our customers and employees is our highest priority.”
The pilot is reportedly from Pennsylvania and was born in 1965.
