The executives at AMC found a massive hit show in 2010 when they green-lit The Walking Dead, and now producers have announced that the iconic series will come to end after its eleventh season.

Based on the famous comic book series by Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead was developed by director Frank Darabont and premiered on October 31, 2010. The show stars Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes, a police officer who wakes up from a coma during a zombie apocalypse. After reuniting with his best friend (Jon Bernthal), wife (Sarah Wayne Callies) and son (Chandler Riggs), Rick must lead his loved ones along with a new group of people through this dangerous world and help them survive as much as he can. The Walking Dead has become notorious for killing off a large number of main characters throughout its run. The series has now become an ensemble cast with no official main character after Lincoln’s departure. While executive producer David Alpert originally stated in 2014 that The Walking Dead could go on for ten more years, it was announced on September 9 that the series would end after its next season.

Many fans of The Walking Dead were shocked at this news, as the reviews and ratings for the series have been much more positive after Angela Kang replaced Scott Gimple as the showrunner. After this news was reported, it was announced that the tenth season of the show would be extended by sixth episodes, while the eleventh and final season will be extended to 24 episodes as opposed to the normal amount which contains 16 episodes. In addition to this announcement, it was reported that the popular characters Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) would be starring together in their own spin-off. The additional six episodes of The Walking Dead’s tenth season will air sometime in the spring of 2021, while its eleventh season will premiere in October, 2021.

Even though The Walking Dead will end after its eleventh season, fans can still look forward to watching its upcoming final season, along the untitled Rick Grimes movie starring Lincoln and the other spin-offs of the show like Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond.
