Amazon Prime Pays $40 Million For Melania Trump Documentary Raising Ethics Concerns With Bezos Seeking Contracts From Trump Administration

Amazon Prime Video announced plans to release a documentary about Melania Trump’s life, offering a behind-the-scenes look at her experiences. Prime reportedly paid $40 million for the film.

The film, which began production in December 2024, will be released in theaters and on the streaming platform in the second half of this year. Melania, serving as an executive producer, will have influence over how her story is portrayed.

Amazon described the documentary as a “truly unique story” in a statement, expressing excitement about the project. The film will be directed by Brett Ratner, known for movies like Rush Hour and The Revenant. Ratner has kept a lower profile in recent years following allegations of sexual misconduct, which he has denied.

The documentary follows Melania’s recent openness about her life, including her memoir published last year, which detailed her modeling career, marriage to Donald Trump and tenure as First Lady. The memoir was a No. 1 New York Times bestseller.

This project comes amid improved relations between Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and the Trump family after years of public friction. During Trump’s first presidential term, he criticized Bezos over The Washington Post’s political coverage and Amazon’s relationship with the U.S. Postal Service. Recently, Amazon donated $1 million to Trump’s inaugural fund, signaling a shift in their relationship.

Bezos, who also owns The Washington Post, has taken steps to reduce perceptions of bias, including ending the newspaper’s endorsement of presidential candidates. Last year, The Post declined to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris, and Bezos defended the decision as an effort to maintain neutrality.

Amazon holds exclusive rights to the Melania Trump documentary and plans to release further details as production progresses.

Ethics experts have expressed alarm about the deal, which they see as Bezos’s thinly veiled attempt to win favor from the new administration.
