We have learned the full title and release date of Amazon’s hotly-anticipated Lord of the Rings series. This title, Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, also hints at the content of the upcoming series, which takes place before the events of the original J.R.R. Tolkien trilogy.
While the development of the series’ plot has been under heavy lockdown since the series was first announced, we already knew that it was going to take place during Middle Earth’s Second Age. Notable events from the Second Age include the downfall of the great human civilization of Númenor, the rise in power of eventual LOTR antagonist Sauron, primarily through his creation of the nineteen Rings of Power.
Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay released a joint statement on the title Wednesday. “The Rings of Power unites all the major stories of Middle-earth’s Second Age… Until now, audiences have only seen the story of the One Ring – but before there was one, there were many… and we’re excited to share the epic story of them all.”
In the video announcement of the title shared to YouTube, fans will immediately recognize the iconic “Ring Verse” that was originally read aloud by Cate Blanchett, who portrayed the elf Galadriel, at the beginning of the first LOTR movie The Fellowship of the Ring. The verse describes all the recipients of the rings of power, and it was likely recorded by Morfydd Clark, the Welsh actor who will play the younger Galadriel in the upcoming series.
Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will premiere on Amazon Prime on Friday, September 2, 2022. Amazon has announced that the show is already planned to be a “multi-season” drama. Check out the title announcement below:
