Amanda Knox Trial Update: New Evidence Connected To Alleged Murder Weapon To Be Presented In Court

Amanda Knox and her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito are once again being tried in the murder of Knox’s roommate Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy, in 2007 while she was spending a semester abroad. The Italian legal system, after acquitting the former couple in 2010, has found reason for a retrial in which more evidence is likely to be presented.

The Italian Supreme Court overturned Knox and Sollecito’s acquittal in March of this year, claiming that the Perugia setting did not have adequate appellate court space. Neither Knox nor Sollecito will be present at the start of the new trial, as Italian law doesn’t require their attendance for the court proceedings.

The Italian Supreme Court has stated that they hold a crucial piece of evidence that has yet to be tested, which will play a large part in the case’s final verdict, reported CBS News. Labeled 36-I, the evidence in question is trace material taken from the 12-inch knife that prosecutors allege was the weapon used to murder Kercher. The knife, located in a kitchen drawer in Sollecito’s apartment, had a small amount of Kercher’s DNA on the blade, which was later deemed insignificant when doubts arose about the legitimacy of the police lab work.

Trace 36-I will likely make or break the Italian court's case against Knox and Sollecito. If it ends up holding Kercher’s DNA, a guilty verdict is probable. If Kercher’s DNA is nowhere to be found on the knife, they will likely be acquitted once again. If the testing on 36-I proves inconclusive, more forensic tests might be ordered.

Knox is currently living back in her native Washington, studying creative writing and the University of Washington. Sollecito, who Knox remains friendly with, is pursing a degree in computer engineering in Verona.
