Amanda Knox Netflix Documentary Investigates Meredith Kercher’s Murder, Resulting Trial

The Amanda Knox documentary arriving on Netflix this weekend offers another look into the murder of Meredith Kercher and the many trials that followed.

Amanda Knox Documentary

Knox willingly participated in Netflix’s Amanda Knox documentary, hoping that by sharing her side of the story that she’ll not only foster more understanding for herself, but for others wrongfully convicted of a crime.

“What I’m trying to convey is a regular person like me, just a kid who was studying abroad who loves languages, could be caught up in this nightmare where they’re portrayed as something they’re not,” Knox said on Good Morning America. “I think I’m trying to explain what it feels like to be wrongfully convicted, to either be this terrible monster or to be just a regular person who is vulnerable.”

Knox added, “A lot of times their stories go overlooked and I think that it’s our moral duty to examine the cases of a wrongfully convicted person from the perspective of their humanity. To really demand that we have objective looks at their cases and the facts of their case as well as them as people as opposed to demonizing in the way that I was.”

While Knox maintains her innocence, she says that the Netflix documentary doesn’t necessarily presume she’s either innocent or guilty. Instead, it offers the factual evidence of the case and allows the audience to make of it what they will.

“What I really appreciate about this documentary is that it’s good journalism in the sense that they give you the reliable facts of the case and they say, ‘Decide for yourself,'” Knox said told GMA. “By showing who was a part of it, not just me, not just my co-defendant, but also the prosecutor and the media, they’re shedding more light on what happened than all the speculation that’s been put out there combined.”

Knox’s defendant in the case was her boyfriend at the time, Raffaele Sollecito. Knox and Sollecito were acquitted of Kercher’s 2007 murder in March 2015. The ruling came following three previous court decisions. Knox and Sollecito were initially found guilty of Kercher’s murder, but were released in 2011 after spending four years in jail when the convictions were overturned. The convictions were reinstated in 2014, but were not upheld by the Italian court last year.

Amanda Knox will begin streaming on Netflix at midnight Sept. 30.
