In April of 2018, actress Allison Mack, best known for her role on the TV series Smallville, was arrested for her involvement with sex trafficking within Keith Raniere’s cult NXVIM. Mack — who was later released on a $5 million bail — was also charged with identity theft, extortion, forced labor, money laundering, and obstruction of justice. Her former Smallville co-star Michael Rosenbaum — who played Lex Luthor — recently spoke out about Mack’s charges on the podcast This Past Weekend.

A caller to the podcast asked Rosenbaum about his thoughts on Mack’s role in NXIVM. Rosenbaum said that he hadn’t voiced his opinions prior because he was in shock. While the two stars worked together for seven years, they were never close, but “there was always a mutual respect and love there.” Rosenbaum said,”When I was on that show, Allison was the sweetest, most professional — she was just a great girl, great actress.” The actor said the news of Mack’s charges were unexpected and proved that he “didn’t really know her.”

Rosenbaum recalled a few times that Mack had spoken about some “self-help” techniques that he thought sounded “a little culty,” but he never paid them any attention. He speculated about what could have led Mack down such a dark path: “”She’s like a lot of actresses or actors—you want attention. We want approval. She found something that she thought would probably give her that, and I don’t think that’s what she was doing when I knew her. I mean, this was years ago. But ultimately, inadvertently, she got into something that was bigger than her.” Rosenbaum said that, in conclusion, he was sad to see that someone who seemed like a “sweetheart” could be capable of such crimes.
