Alicia Silverstone‘s latest venture into animal rights is a PETA campaign protesting wool, which states that she’s “rather go naked than wear wool.”
The ad shows Silverstone walking naked in a field holding a sheep mask. This is part of PETA’s #WoolFreeWinter campaign, of which SIlverstone is a spokesperson. “If you’re trying to avoid wool, why not make that leap?” she asks in a related video. “Say, ‘I’m never going to buy wool again.'”
The video continues with the 40-year-old actress arguing that, while most people think sheering the sheep does not harm them, the process is so hurried that oftentimes the sheep are badly wounded. “Shearers are usually paid by volume, not by the hour, which encourages fast work without any regard for the welfare of the sheep,” Silverstone says. “This hasty and careless shearing leads to frequent injuries, and workers use a needle and thread to sew the worst wounds shut — without any pain relief. Strips of skin — and even teats, tails, and ears — are often cut or ripped off during shearing.”
This is not Silverstone’s first collaboration with PETA nor her first foray into animal rights activism. In 2000, she appeared in a video for the organization about being a vegetarian and the health benefits of such. She then took the plunge and went full vegan, and in 2009 wrote a vegan cookbook called The Kind Diet. In 2014, she participated in a video exposing the horrors of collecting down for winter-wear.
Other celebrities involved in the current PETA campaign include Pamela Anderson, Jenna Dewan Tatum, Christina Applegate and Khloe Kardashian.
