Alicia Keys Brings Personal Story To Broadway With Her Thrilling Show, ‘Hell’s Kitchen’

Alicia Keys, the Grammy-winning musician, has made her mark on Broadway with her new musical Hell’s Kitchen, drawing inspiration from her upbringing in New York City. 

Located just steps from the iconic Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, theater enthusiasts can now secure their tickets to experience Hell’s Kitchen.

Set in a modest apartment within Hell’s Kitchen, the musical revolves around the life of 17-year-old Ali, who harbors ambitious dreams and grapples with a cautious mother determined to prevent Ali from repeating her own past mistakes. As Ali falls in love with a talented young drummer and befriends a piano teacher who lives in the same building, a powerful narrative explores the vast potential of Ali’s future.

This latest theatrical endeavor marks Keys’ second venture into Broadway after her involvement in the 2011 play Stick Fly, for which she was a composer. Renowned for her remarkable music career, which has garnered her 16 Grammy Awards, Keys is celebrated for her distinct fusion of R&B, soul, hip-hop and pop genres. Her impressive repertoire includes chart-topping hits like “Fallin’,” “If I Ain’t Got You,” and “Empire State of Mind.” In Hell’s Kitchen, audiences experience these beloved classics alongside freshly crafted songs.

Hell’s Kitchen is located at the Shubert Theatre in the heart of the Theatre District, conveniently near the actual Hell’s Kitchen. While the musical initially premiered at The Public Theater in Manhattan’s NoHo neighborhood, it has now found its place closer to the neighborhood that serves as its backdrop. The migration from downtown to uptown mirrors the trajectory of other successful productions, including Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s Hamilton, which also transitioned after its initial debut at The Public.

Notably, the entire creative team behind Hell’s Kitchen and Keys share a common bond as native New Yorkers. Director Michael Greif, a four-time Tony nominee recognized for his work on the New York-centric Rent and other notable productions, hails from Brooklyn. Choreographer Camille A. Brown, a two-time Tony nominee acclaimed for her contribution to the 2022 revival of for colored girls, proudly represents Queens. Furthermore, book writer Kristoffer Diaz, a Pulitzer Prize finalist renowned for The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity, brings his roots from Yonkers, situated just beyond the city limits.

Hell’s Kitchen offers a badly needed fresh voice to Broadway that will surely enjoy a long run.
