There has been much speculation about the famed final four words spoken on Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, the four-episode Netflix special, by fans and the cast alike. But after months of waiting – A Year in the Life was released in November 2016 – Alexis Bledel, who plays Rory Gilmore, has spoken out about her character’s predicament.
If one needs reminding, the final four words were an exchange between Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) and her daughter Rory.
“Mom,” said Rory.
“Yeah?” Lorelai responded.
“I’m pregnant.”
Speaking to TVLine, Bledel spoke about her character’s ending. “I told [series creator] Amy [Sherman-Palladino] that I hoped Rory would end on a high note after all of her hard work. I wanted to see her succeed and be thriving,” Bledel said. “So it was a hard thing for me to digest.”
Sherman-Palladino, who created the show in 2000, had apparently decided Rory’s fate long ago.
“She knew the reaction she was going to get out of the audience,” said Bledel. “She’s delighted by throwing everyone a curveball. I knew that’s what she wanted and I just trusted her.”
Gilmore Girls has always focused on the parallels between the lives of single mother Lorelai and her daughter, so in some ways, this ending fits nicely. But this might, after all, not actually be the end.
Regardless, fans of Bledel don’t have to wait long to see her back on the screen. Bledel co-stars in The Handmaid’s Tale premiering on April 26 on Hulu.
