Famed fashion designer Alexander McQueen left $82,000 of his $26 million estate to the care of his three dogs, according to his will, which was made public on Wednesday. The British designer, who committed suicide last year, also left money to his housekeepers, his family and various charities.
McQueen was known for caring extravagantly for his three pups. When he walked the runway at the end of a show, he often walked with at least one of the dogs. Tina Gaudoin, a former editor of WSJ magazine, recalled that McQueen once halted an interview to share a Big Mac with one of his dogs, who ate first.
After taking a cocktail of cocaine, sleeping pills and tranquilizers, McQueen hanged himself in his Mayfair flat on February 11, 2010, the day before his mother Joyce's funeral. Police found a book with a note signed by McQueen that read, "Look after my dogs, sorry, I love you." He was 40 years old.
An exhibition of McQueen's work is on display in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. "Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty" showcases original gowns and accessories designed by the ill-fated artist as well as video footage of his over-the-top runway shows.
