Alex Murdaugh Denies Killing Wife & Son On Witness Stand On First Day Of Trial
After several weeks of testimony, Alex Murdaugh finally took the stand on Thursday. He is facing two counts of murder following the deaths of his wife, Margaret, and son, Paul.
The former attorney pleaded not guilty.
However, Murdaugh did confess that he lied to investigators about where he was on the night the killings of his wife and son took place.
He also admitted that his voice was in the video captured at the dog kennels where Margaret and Paul’s bodies were found.
Murdaugh attributed his lies about his whereabouts on the evening of June 7, 2021, to “paranoid thinking” caused by his addiction to opiate painkillers.
However, he still denied accusations that he shot and killed Margaret and Paul, instead testifying that he went to the dog kennels after dinner and then went back to his house to lie down on the couch.
He then went to visit his mother, who has Alzheimer’s. On the way back from her house, Murdaugh called Margaret twice and texted her but received no answer.
He became emotional while talking about his son, saying that he was extremely close to him. He also was visibly upset when he described seeing the bodies of his wife and son the night they were killed.
Murdaugh denied testimony that provided evidence that after finding the bodies, he searched for a restaurant in Edisto Beach on Google as well as read a group text message. He claimed he was trying to call his brothers and a family friend.
He also acknowledged that he stole money from his law firm and clients. This led to his resignation from the firm, Parker Law Group. Prosecutors say that Murdaugh killed his wife and son to shift focus away from his financial crimes, where he has nearly 100 different charges.
