Alex Murdaugh Asks For New Trial For Murder Convictions, Alleging Witness Tampering

Alex Murdaugh’s lawyers have filed court papers demanding a new trial for the convicted murderer.

They are accusing the court clerk of jury tampering.

Murdaugh is currently serving two life sentences for the murders of his wife, Maggie, 52, and son, Paul, 22.

Two days after his sentencing, Murdaugh’s attorneys appealed the convictions. They are accusing Rebecca Hill, the Colleton County clerk, of tempering with the jury by advising them not to believe Murdaugh’s testimony, pressuring them to reach a guilty verdict, and misrepresenting material information to the trial judge.

They also suggest that Hill’s motivation for doing this was to secure a book deal.

The attorneys claim that Hill “betrayed her oath of office for money and fame.”

Hill released a book, Behind the Doors of Justice: The Murdaugh Murders, in late July about the Murdaugh murders.

It took the jury less than three hours to reach a guilty verdict for Murdaugh. Several jury members pointed to the dog kennel video Alex’s son Paul shot on his phone minutes before his death. In the video, Alex Murdaugh can be heard speaking in the background. Murdaugh initially said he wasn’t near the dog kennels the night his son and wife were murdered but later admitted to lying about his whereabouts after the evidence was played in court.

South Carolina’s bar to overturn a jury verdict is often very high. Murdaugh’s lawyers argue that there is enough proof of jury tampering for an evidentiary hearing.

If Murdaugh’s murder conviction is overturned, it is not likely he will be released from prison, as he plans to plead guilty to stealing from clients and his law firm, which means he could still spend years even if his murder convictions are overturned.
