Alex Morgan, a forward/striker of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer team, injured her left knee during a game on Wednesday.
Morgan, who helped the U.S. Women’s Soccer team win the gold medal at the London Olympics in 2012, is currently playing for the Portland Thorns. They were in Boston playing against the Boston Breakers when, ten minutes into the game, Morgan had a run in with Breakers’ defender Jazmyne Avant and had to be pulled out of the game.
The Thorns lost to the Breakers 2-1, but still qualified for the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) playoffs which begin August 24.
Morgan watched the remaining soccer match from the sidelines wearing a knee brace. That night she tweeted her thanks to her fans, promising to update them on her condition following an examination upon her return to Portland.
According to reports Morgan has been diagnosed with a mild MCL sprain and the injury will keep Morgan, reportedly the Thorns’ top scorer, on the sidelines for two to four weeks.
“It’s a relief that there is no significant damage to my knee. I will do everything in my power between now and Aug. 24 in order to be available for the playoffs and to win the championship,” Morgan said.
