Alec Baldwin Settles With Estate Of Halyna Hutchins, Cinematographer Shot & Killed On Set Of ‘Rust’

Alec Baldwin has reached a settlement with the family of Halyna Hutchins, the director of photography on the film Rust which Baldwin was starring in when he accidentally shot her with a vintage gun prop that was mistakenly loaded with a live round.

The film, a low-budget indie western, was being shot in New Mexico, and Baldwin was a producer on the project as well. No one has been charged in the incident, but Hutchins’ widower Matthew Hutchins filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Baldwin and the production company behind Rust in February.

The suit accused Baldwin and the set’s production leaders of cutting corners in the name of saving money, and not living up to industry standards regarding work hours and other elements.

Hutchins had initially been seeking compensatory and punitive damages, but the only aspect of the settlement made public so far is that the film is going to continue in production, and Matthew will be the new executive producer.

Matthew himself confirmed this in his statement about the settlement, which read in part, “The filming of ‘Rust’ which I will now executive, will resume with all the original principal players on board in January 2023.”

It’s not clear what Matthew’s specific crew role will be moving forward, but the film’s director Joel Souza, who was also injured in the shooting incident, made a statement to Entertainment Weekly about not feeling right continuing the project without him.

“In my own attempts to heal, any decision to return to finish directing the film would only make sense for me if it was done with the involvement of Matt and the Hutchins family,” Souza said, adding that finishing this work will hopefully be a tribute to Halyna.

There is still a chance people involved in this shooting will face criminal charges. When asked if this settlement would affect their investigation by CNN a representative for the Santa Fe District Attorney Heather Brewer said, “If the facts and evidence warrant criminal charges under New Mexico law then charges will be brought. No one is above the law.”
