Saturday Night Live has tapped Alec Baldwin to play Donald Trump on the show when it returns for season 42.
It was confirmed Wednesday that SNL hosting veteran Baldwin would take on the part of New York real estate mogul-turned-Republican presidential nominee Trump on the show. The announcement was made via a video that features Baldwin in character as Trump and Kate McKinnon in character as Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
After last season’s success with having Larry David guest star as Bernie Sanders throughout the primaries, Lorne Michaels was in search of someone to come on board to play Trump, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Instead of bringing back Darrell Hammond or the newly fired Taran Killam to play the part, Michaels got the idea over the summer to have Baldwin play him.
During his record-setting 16 times hosting Saturday Night Live, Baldwin has played such notable people as Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, Bono and Tony Bennett.
Saturday Night Live returns for season 42 on Saturday, Oct. 1. Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie is making her SNL debut hosting the show, while The Weeknd is returning as a musical guest. The following week will be hosted by Lin-Manuel Miranda and will feature Twenty One Pilots as the musical guest.
