Alec Baldwin made a surprise appearance as Donald Trump on the summer edition of Saturday Night Live‘s “Weekend Update” segment.
On Thursday night, the sketch poked fun at Trump’s latest rally in Phoenix on Tuesday and how the president looked directly at Monday’s solar eclipse without, protective eyewear. “Wow, how about that eclipse, folks?” Baldwin, as Trump, asked the audience, after walking out with very dark sunglasses on. “Now, a lot of people don’t know this, but you can damage your eyes while looking at an eclipse. No one predicted this. They couldn’t have. I figured it out all by myself.”
Baldwin then pointed to the only black person in the audience (Kenan Thompson) and said, “Look, they found the one black guy at the rally and they sat him right behind me. Now because of the eclipse, I can’t tell, are you really black?” he asks. “Well that’s what the ad said you was looking for,” he responds, referring to the Craigslist ads that Trump’s campaign sends out to get folks to come to the rally in exchange for cash.
“First, I wanna talk about Charlottesville. As we all know, there was a tragic victim that came out of Charlottesville: me,” Baldwin jokes. He blames the media for reporting on everything he says, “even the bad ones.”
They discuss the building of the wall, and Trump starts a cheer: “What do we want?” “The wall!” Who’s gonna pay for it?” “Mexico!” “That’s right, you are, the American taxpayer.” At the end, Baldwin brings out Steve Bannon, dressed as the grim reaper. “Steve, we love you,” says Baldwin. “I’m going to crush you,” replies the reaper.
