Alden Ehrenreich was officially announced as the new Han Solo at the Star Wars Celebration Future Filmmakers panel in London Sunday.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who are directing the Han Solo standalone film in the massive Star Wars franchise, were the ones to break the news of Ehrenreich’s casting as Han Solo. Not only did Lord and Miller reveal that Ehrenreich was up against 3,000 other hopeful actors, but that he was the first person to take a stab at auditioning for the part of Han Solo.
Since being cast, Ehrenreich has had the chance to step onto the Millennium Falcon, the famed spacecraft that made its debut in the original Star Wars films and that made its return in the recent Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
“There’s something about it that just felt so exciting… that was more exciting than it was nerve-wracking,” Ehrenreich gushed during the presentation. “Actually being on the Falcon after having seen it for so long was just, yeah. You just kind of immediately go, ‘Alright, OK. Cool.'”
Ehrenreich is perhaps best known for starring in the Coen brothers’ 2016 film Hail, Caesar, in which he proved to be something of a scene-stealer as singing cowboy movie star Hobie Doyle in the star-studded film.
Ehrenreich’s other film credits include Woody Allen‘s Blue Jasmine, Beautiful Creatures, and Francis Ford Coppola’s Twixt and Tetro, which was Ehrenreich’s feature film debut.
The untitled Han Solo standalone film is slated to hit theaters May 25, 2018.
