Al Roker came under fire for posting a smiling selfie while on the ground covering the flooding in S.C.
Al Roker was forced to apologize after posing a smiling selfie with a wrecked car in the background in the midst of covering the flooding in South Carolina.
Weatherman Roker tweeted a picture of himself and two of his coworkers grinning broadly with a car in the rubble of a collapsed highway while on the ground in South Carolina. “My crew and I getting ready to report on East Coast flooding from S. Carolina on @NBCNightlyNews with Kate Snow,” Roker captioned the since-deleted picture.
Roker quickly came under fire for the picture, which seemed to ignore the fact that the flood was causing widespread damage in the region – and wasn’t anything to be smiling about.
After realizing the backlash the picture was causing, Roker returned to Twitter to offer an apology for being “insensitive,” while also noting that the driver of the car in the picture had emerged unscathed.
“I apologize for being insensitive. The woman in that car got out without injury. We Should not have been in the picture,” Roker wrote, adding, “We came down to report and I offended those who lost so much. I am sorry.”
