Al Pacino has opened up about a near-death experience he had in 2020 in which he lost his pulse for a few minutes.
Ahead of releasing his memoir, Sonny Boy, Pacino revealed he suffered a “bad” case of Covid-19 before vaccines were available. He told The New York Times that he felt “unusually not good” before developing a fever and becoming dehydrated.
“So, I got someone to get me a nurse to hydrate me. I was sitting there in my house, and I was gone. Like that. I didn’t have a pulse,” the 84-year-old actor said. “In a matter of minutes, they were there – the ambulance in front of my house. I had about six paramedics in that living room, and there were two doctors, and they had these outfits on that looked like they were from outer space or something.”
The Godfather legend described the situation as “shocking,” recalling waking up being surrounded by people.
“Everyone was around me, and they said, ‘He’s back. He’s here.'”
Pacino said his perspective on death has changed as he has gotten older but that his four children and decades-long career have kept him motivated.
“It’s natural, I guess, to have a different view of death as you get older. It’s just the way it is. I didn’t ask for it. Just comes, like a lot of things just come.”
Pacino told People his “great assistant Michael Quinn” was the reason he received medical attention so quickly.
“He got the people coming because the nurse that was taking care of me said, ‘I don’t feel a pulse on this guy.'” the actor said.
