Airbag Recall Update: Toyota Adds 1.37 Million Cars To Recall List
Toyota has added 1.37 million cars to the Takata airbag recall list after it was revealed that Toyota Corollas were one of the high-risk vehicles.
Toyota And Honda Expand Recall
Over 33 million vehicles were recalled before the end of May after it was discovered that Takata airbags had a malfunction that caused explosive airbag deployment, which could send shrapnel through the car and kill passengers instead of save them.
Cars affected come from a range of manufacturers, including BMW, Honda, Ford and Mazda. In May, Toyota recalled the 2002-2005 Toyota Corolla. On Tuesday, June 16, Toyota announced that it would be expanding the recall to include the 2003-2007 Corolla and Matrix, 2005-2006 Tundra, 2005-2007 Sequoia and 2003-2007 Lexus SC430, bringing the Toyota recall total to 2.9 million cars.
According to Takata tests, the 2003-2007 Toyota Corolla and 2004-2007 Honda Accord were deemed the most at risk for exploding driver’s-size airbags. Honda recently announced that 1.4 million cars that have already received new driver’s-side airbags have been recalled again, this time with regards to the passenger side airbags.
Takata Airbag Replacements Could Take Years
As the recall expands, so does the demand for new airbags. Already, wait times for receiving free air bag replacements have been estimated as years in some areas.
