The Republican National Committee (RNC) is using robotic calls to spread inaccurate information about the 2020 election with scripted calls to voters’ phones on behalf of the new co-chair, Lara Trump, Donald Trump‘s daughter-in-law.
Despite calls from prominent Republicans to focus on the future and win in 2024, the RNC, under Lara’s leadership, continues to propagate baseless claims about massive fraud in the last election.
As a commentator and surrogate for the former president, Lara has consistently supported Trump’s unfounded allegations. The recent call obtained by CNN, estimated to have reached approximately 145,000 recipients between April 1 and 7, echoed Lara’s previous statements.
The scripted call alleged various forms of election fraud, such as the absence of photo IDs, unsecured ballot drop boxes, mass mailing of ballots and voter rolls that contained deceased individuals and non-citizens. It even suggested that Democrats aim to cancel out legitimate votes with those cast by non-citizens. This rhetoric marks a significant departure for the RNC, as it had tried to deemphasize election fraud claims since Trump’s departure from office.
This development follows earlier reports that the RNC had questioned employees reapplying for their positions about their belief in the stolen 2020 election, suggesting a potential litmus test for hiring. The RNC denied the existence of such a test. Lara and new Chair Michael Whatley assumed their positions after Drew McKissick and Ronna McDaniel, who dissatisfied Trump with their handling of fraud claims during the 2020 election, were ousted.
There is no evidence to support widespread fraud in the 2020 election. Several Republican election officials in crucial battleground states and former Trump Attorney General William Barr have acknowledged this fact. Trump and his supporters filed numerous court cases contesting the election results but failed to provide substantial evidence. Judges dismissed all of the cases.
From November 2020 to February 2024, Lara claimed that Democrats cheated in the 2020 presidential election. In a recent NBC interview, Lara said, “I think we’re past that. I think that’s in the past. We learned a lot. Certainly, we took a lot of notes.”
She mentioned the lawsuits across 23 states to improve election integrity and raised concerns about pandemic-era voting procedures during the 2020 election. In the NBC interview, she also acknowledged the need for trust in mail-in voting, highlighting the inconsistency in her messaging.
Lara was a controversial pick for the RNC co-chair job, with many Republicans, including former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, calling it nepotism.
