England and Greece players wore black armbands and held a minute’s silence before Thursday night’s Nations League game at London’s Wembley Stadium to commemorate soccer star George Baldock’s life.
Baldock, the England-born Greece international, was found in his swimming pool by police at his home in Glyfada, southern Athens, on Wednesday night. His cause of death was not immediately apparent.
Baldock won 12 caps with Greece, with his international debut coming in February 2022.
In a statement, European football’s governing body said, “UEFA would like to send its condolences to the family of George Baldock, the Hellenic Football Federation (HFF) and Panathinaikos FC following the Greek international’s sudden and untimely death.”
Baldock’s family said they are “heartbroken” by the sudden yet tragic passing of their “beloved George.”
“George, you were the most special father, fiance, son, brother, uncle, friend, teammate and person,” said his family in a statement.
Police spokeswoman Konstantina Dimoglidou said there is no evidence that the death was suspicious.
She added, “The criminal investigations directorate also searched the house. It doesn’t seem that a criminal act took place, but the investigation is continuing for any eventuality.”
While various sources claimed that Baldock’s cause of death was drowning, Dimoglidou was not able to immediately confirm that.
Many football community members have paid tribute to Baldock, including former teammates.
In a joint statement, the Greece players said, “It is impossible to believe that our dear friend and teammate, George, is no longer with us. Our pain is indescribable. Tonight, we will try to reach the strength of his soul, which is a bright example for us all. Our thoughts are with his family. We will never forget you friend.”
