After Giving Up Drugs, Rocker Pete Doherty Faces Toe Amputation After Being Unable To Give Cheese With His Type 2 Diabetes

Rocker Pete Doherty, who once dated supermodel Kate Moss, is facing having his toes amputated due to his inability to give up fatty foods. 

Doherty, who’s the lead singer of The Libertines, battled with crack, cocaine and heroin addiction in his younger years. But now he’s facing a different addiction: healthy foods. The formerly gaunt singer-songwriter hurtled to fame in the early 2000s and has returned to the stage in the last few years.

Doherty revealed that doctors have warned him that he is at risk of having his toes amputated amid his fight with Type 2 diabetes, having been diagnosed with the chronic disease. He has had to perform from a chair on the last five dates of his European tour.

In a video shared online from a gig in Munich, Doherty provided fans with an alarming health update: “I saw the doctor today, and he said you need to stay off your feet as much as you can; otherwise, you’ll lose your toes.” 

People with Type 2 diabetes are at higher risk for many health-related problems, including foot or leg amputation. 

Doherty has been open about how his earlier indulgence in drugs had been replaced with alternatives like unhealthy food and drinks. 

“I gave up the main poisons, and my health improved,” he told The Guardian last year. “Then you get told alcohol, cheese, and sugar are just as bad, and you were healthier when you were on heroin.”

In another interview with The Evening Standard, he described receiving harsh words from his doctor urging an overhaul of eating and drinking habits: “I have seen a liver doctor who says I need to change my diet. There is too much cheese and too much milk. But the cheese is so good; that’s part of the reason I stay here. It’s a cholesterol and diabetes thing now, but there are tablets. It makes a big difference.”
