Adrian Peterson, the former Minnesota Vikings running back, is once again facing legal troubles. Despite earning over $100 million during his career, Peterson has struggled to maintain his luxurious lifestyle while balancing his family responsibilities.
Two arrest warrants have been issued recently in Fort Bend County, Texas, near Houston. “The current legal case is related to a misunderstanding regarding Adrian’s court appearances as it relates to child support, and he is actively working with his legal team to resolve this matter as quickly as possible,” his publicist, Denise White, said in a statement.
The star running back failed to appear in court for child support proceedings involving two of his children. According to court documents, two women from Minnesota are listed as custodial parents. Both bonds have been posted, totaling $17,000.
One of the warrants reads: “TO ANY PEACE OFFICER OF THE STATE OF TEXAS—GREETING, YOU ARE HEREBY COMMANDED TO ARREST: ADRIAN LEWIS PETERSON, to be found in your county, and ADRIAN LEWIS PETERSON safely keep, so that you have ADRIAN LEWIS PETERSON before the Honorable 328th Judicial District Court of Fort Bend County, Texas, at the Court House of said County… and there to answer for their failure to appear for CIVIL NON-SUPPORT on December 05, 2024 before the 328TH JUDICIAL DISTRICT COURT, as ordered.”
In addition to these legal issues, Peterson faces significant financial difficulties in Texas. He is undergoing property seizures to pay off $12 million in debt. Peterson attributed his financial troubles to a former adviser who guaranteed repayment of a 2016 business loan he co-signed with partners. However, loan documents list Peterson as the sole borrower, with a 12% interest rate tied to an anticipated $18 million contract from the Vikings that never materialized.
Peterson’s earnings sharply declined after a knee injury in 2016 and the Vikings’ decision not to exercise his contract option in 2017. Despite his off-field challenges, Peterson is widely expected to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
His troubles in Texas extend beyond financial woes. In October, Peterson was fined $500 for slapping a woman from behind, a charge to which he pleaded no contest. Additionally, in 2022, Peterson was arrested following an argument with his wife on a plane. The charges were later dropped after his wife described the incident as a disagreement.
Peterson, 39, has not played in the NFL since the 2021 season, but his football career remains legendary. He rushed for 296 yards in a single game in his rookie season, setting an NFL record. Over his career, he accumulated 14,918 rushing yards, cementing his place as one of history’s most successful running backs.
In 2014, Peterson reached a plea deal to settle charges of child abuse.
