After Being Named To Billionaires List, Selena Gomez Says ‘It’s Distasteful To Talk About Money’

Actress, singer and entrepreneur Selena Gomez has officially become a billionaire. She is now one of the youngest self-made female billionaires in the United States.

The Bloomberg Billionaires Index recently reported that Gomez is worth $1.3 billion. Although her money has accumulated through her multi-hyphen career, her biggest source of income has been her cosmetics brand, Rare Beauty.

“I’m very grateful,” Gomez told E! Of her latest financial accomplishment, but shared, “I personally think it’s distasteful to talk about money…I really am giving all the credit to the people who buy the products.”

She continued, “They’re the ones that made this dream of mine come true, so I’m really, really honored and just happy.”

Gomez previously told Time in May that Rare Beauty’s success relied heavily on her disinterest in the financial aspect of the business. “I have this weird thing in my head where if I focus on the numbers, I’ll lose whatever it is that made Rare Beauty Rare Beauty,” she said. “I never wanted it to be about making a lot of money, and that’s it.”

“I hope Rare Beauty doesn’t give off the vibe that you have to do anything,” she added. She said she tends to wear minimal makeup and declared the judgment people who don’t wear makeup receive to be “bulls—.”

Alongside the cosmetics brand, the Rare Impact Fund, a social initiative, was founded to raise awareness of mental health issues and connect struggling people to resources. With 1% of Rare Beauty’s profits going toward the fund, the company reportedly made $7 million last year. The Rare Impact Fund has partnered with various other social justice organizations, including The Trevor Project and The Jed Foundation.

Gomez recently denied having plastic surgery but admitted to having Botox injections.

On September 30, Gomez attended the  62nd New York Film Festival at Alice Tully Hall for the premiere of her new film, Emilia Pérez, a Spanish-French musical crime comedy. The film follows Rita, an underappreciated lawyer at a large firm that prioritizes getting criminals out of jail rather than bringing them to justice; Rita soon is hired by a criminal organization.
