‘Affluenza’ Mom Tonya Couch Arrested And Charged With Felony

Earlier today, Tonya Couch, 48, mother of the infamous “affluenza” teen, was arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department on a felony charge after being transported back to the United States from Mexico.

It is unclear when she will be sent back to Texas. She is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Downtown L.A. Texas’ Tarrant County District Attorney has formally charged her with Hindering Apprehension of a Felon and set bail at $1 million. Couch was transported overnight by L.A. officials in an unmarked sedan. She remained quiet as she was lead through the Los Angeles International Airport in handcuffs.

Her son, Ethan Couch, was allowed to temporary remain in Mexico. He was granted a three-day stay in his deportation case which will go before a judge. It is unclear how long it will take to make a decision.

A statement was released Wednesday by Scott Brown and Wm. Reagan Wynn, attorneys in Texas but who cannot practice law in Mexico, are assisting Couch and his family to make sure he is treated fairly.

“We believe that, until the Mexican Federal Judge enters an appropriate order authorizing it, Ethan will not be returned to the United States. We are uncertain how long the legal process will take or how it will ultimately resolve.”

Earlier this week, Ethan Couch, better known to the media as the “affluenza teen,” was detained in Mexico with his mother, Tonya Couch. The two disappeared a month ago after it was suspected Couch broke his probation by attending a party where alcohol was present. Couch then missed a meeting with his probation officer and left the country with his mother.

The term “affluenza” term was coined after Couch’s lawyers tried to convince the jury that their client didn’t know right from wrong due to his wealthy upbringing. Couch was three times the legal limit when he struck and killed four people.

Error happened.
