Aerosmith was set to get back to their Las Vegas residency shows coming up in June and July, but the band just released a statement that the shows were being canceled because frontman Steven Tyler went through a recent relapse.

“After foot surgery to prepare for the stage and the necessity of pain management during the process, he has recently relapsed and voluntarily entered a treatment program to concentrate on his health and recovery,” the band clarified in a social media post. They also said those who purchased show tickets on Ticketmaster will receive a refund.
Tyler’s years of alcohol and drug addiction are no secret. When acting as a guest speaker for a few graduates of Maui Drug Court, he said first got high in 1964, when he would have been 16. “By 1984, I was 126 pounds, shooting cocaine,” Tyler said gravely. “I’m a better drug addict and alcoholic than I am a musician. I got to keep it in check.”
The singer has gotten sober before, saying he stayed sober between 1988 and 2004 before relapsing due to being prescribed pain medication for foot surgery. “Addiction’s a strange, crazy thing with humans,” Tyler mused. His big message for the graduates was the importance of support groups like AA and insisted they remain in programs like that.
“I express my joy all because of AA,” Tyler said, and later added “On tour wherever I am – Istanbul or Beirut or New York City – I just look it up, find out where the closest meeting to the hotel is. I walk in and say, ‘I’m home.'”
Aerosmith plans to begin their shows again in September, with stops in Bangor, Maine and Boston, Massachusetts before beginning their Las Vegas Residency, Aerosmith: Deuces Are Wild, on September 14.
