Singer/songwriter Adele is reportedly in talks with the NFL to perform as the halftime show headliner, unless her nerves get in the way.
Super Bowl LI will be the 51st Super Bowl and 47th with modern NFL regulations, and is scheduled to take place in Houston, Texas, on Feb. 5, 2017. Aside from the much anticipated Super Bowl commercials, and of course the football itself, the Halftime Show is one of the biggest parts of the annual NFL championship game. The Halftime show, headlined by Beyonce and Coldplay in 2016, generally includes the biggest pop stars of today.
Adele has arguably been one of the most famous performers in the world since her debut album 19 came out in 2008, and won her the Grammy for Best New Artist. Every show of her current tour, Adele Live, is already sold out. This year’s MTV VMAs, airing Aug. 28, have nominated Adele for eight awards, second only to Beyonce, who has eleven.
“There is nobody bigger in the world than Adele right now and organisers are doing absolutely everything they can to try to persuade her to sign up,” tells an NFL source. “She’s sold out every date on her tour, everyone wants a piece of her and they know they can bank on her bringing in the viewers.” The problem? “It’s Adele’s nerves that are the issue — it hasn’t been an easy sell.”
The Super Bowl maintains a TV audience of about 115 million US viewers, let alone those outside of the country, and those that will view the performance online the next day. Despite Adele’s popularity and soaring ticket sales, the pressure of the Super Bowl audience might prove to be too much for the star.
