Adele thanked her manager Jonathan Dickins in her Album of the Year acceptance speech at the Grammys on Sunday.
She stammered over her words in a flurry, first complimenting Dickins, then taking it back, and then clarifying the compliment again. “Thank you to my manager… I owe you everything. We’ve been together for 10 years, and I love you like you’re my dad,” she said. And then as an afterthought, added, “I love you so, so much. I don’t love my dad, that’s the thing. That doesn’t mean a lot.”
She clarified at the end. “I love you like I would love my dad,” she concluded. Adele’s father has been tabloid news for a while, because he reportedly left Adele and her mother when the singer was around three.
Adele swept her nominated categories this year, taking home five Grammys, including for the coveted Album of the Year and Song of the Year. Also in her acceptance speech, she declared how Beyoncé deserved the Best Album win over her, and actually broke her Grammy in half to share with the superstar. “I want you to be my mommy,” Adele told Beyonce.
