Adele Opens Up About Her Struggle With Postpartum Depression

Adele recently opened up about her battle with postpartum depression in a Vanity Fair interview for their December edition.

ADELE SPEAKS ON HER BATTLE WITH POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION

Adele became a mother in 2012 when her son Angelo was born. Unfortunately, the singer also dealt with depression following the birth. While she’s seemed excited for another child in the past, she admitted she is not so sure. “I’m too scared,” she said. “I had really bad postpartum depression after I had my son, and it frightened me.”

At first Adele didn’t want to talk to anyone about the problem. Her boyfriend Simon Konecki suggested she speak with other mothers, but mothers were the last group of people Adele wanted to talk to. “Then, without realising it, I was gravitating towards pregnant women and other women with children, because I found they’re a bit more patient,” Adele explained. “You’ll be talking to someone, but you’re not really listening, because you’re so f–kin’ tired.”

The singer did not take any anti-depressants and found that talking to other women who had gone through similar issues helped a lot. According to the NHS, more than 10% of all mothers experience postpartum (or post-natal in British English) depression within a year of having a child.

Further in the interview, Adele explained that postpartum depression manifests itself in different ways in different women. “One day I said to a friend, ‘I f–kin’ hate this,’ and she just burst into tears and said, ‘I f–kin’ hate this, too.’ And it was done. It lifted. My knowledge of postpartum is that you don’t want to be with your child; you’re worried you might hurt your child; you’re worried you weren’t doing a good job,” Adele explained. “But I was obsessed with my child. I felt very inadequate; I felt like I’d made the worst decision of my life. It [postpartum depression] can come in many different forms. Eventually I just said, I’m going to give myself an afternoon a week, just to do whatever the f–k I want without my baby.”

Adele noted  how she feels guilty when she is on tour and doesn’t get to see her son as often as she would like. She revealed she never feels guilty when she’s not working, but usually does when she is away. “You’re constantly trying to make up for stuff when you’re a mom.”
