Last Friday, a young golfer named Happy Gilmore decided to commit to Ball State University.
Happy Gilmore was a comedy in the mid-90s about a hockey player who discovered he could hit a golf ball over long distances. The movie follows his adventures as he decides to become a golfer and compete in tournaments. Adam Sandler played the titular role in the film.
The actor quote tweeted Gilmore’s announcement and congratulated him on his upcoming college career.
Gilmore, who was born Landon James Gilmore, replied to Sandler’s tweet, writing, “My life is complete.”
Gilmore was given the nickname “Happy” when he was a kid because he had a powerful drive like Sandler’s character. When he was nine years old, he won a long-drive contest at a junior competition.
Gilmore went viral in May 2022 when he tried to qualify for the U.S. Open as an amateur. He currently places inside the top 500 of the junior boys’ amateur rankings.
Gilmore said he enters all of his tournaments using the name Happy. He told the Indy Star that he doesn’t feel that his name adds extra pressure, and he enjoys that it makes him stand out. “I don’t let it get in my head or that I have to play good because of it,” he said. “I just go out and do my thing.”
