Singers Adam Levine, of Maroon 5, and Lady Gaga appear to be engaging in a heated Twitter feud after Levine called out an un-named ‘artist’ for sampling and repackaging art of the past.
On Sept. 20, Levine tweeted a slightly ambiguous tweet, writing, “Urgh.. recycling old art for a younger generation doesn’t make you an artist. It makes you an art teacher.”
Fans of Lady Gaga, a self-proclaimed artist, immediately felt Levine was targeting Mother Monster. On Sept. 18, Gaga had tweeted about her upcoming album Art Pop and her newest single “Applause,” declaring that she was an “artist” among “celebrities”:
Levine seems to have taken offense to Gaga’s larger than life persona, clarifying his initial tweet, writing, “I unabashedly love writing and performing pop music for both myself AND everyone around me. That’s it. It doesn’t need any extra sauce.”
Later that night, Gaga responded to Levine’s initial tweet, joking, “uh oh guys the art police is here.”
Three days later, Levine rekindled the feud, taunting, “we should call the grammar police”:
Levine is currently resuming his reality television gig as a judge for NBC’s singing competition The Voice and Lady Gaga’s album Artpop is set for release Nov. 11.
