On Monday, actress Jaime King commented on the reports that she was sued by her landlord for overdue rent and lost custody of her children after failing to complete a six-month rehab program.
She asserted that at the top of her list of concerns was her children – and not about her housing problems.
On March 17, it was revealed by court documents that King’s ex, Kyle Newman, was granted sole physical custody of their two sons, James, 11, and Leo, 9. King and Newman will share legal custody, but Newman will now have “tie-breaking authority.”

King was required, and failed, to complete a six-month drug and alcohol rehab program, including weekly testing and a 12-step program, as well as a 26-week parenting course. She is allowed visits with her children three times a week, provided there is an approved supervisor present, such as her mother, sister, or brother-in-law.
Court documents report that King’s landlord, Sheila Irani, sued King for owing over $42,000 in rent. According to Irani, King stopped paying her rent of $10,145 a month in January, and she has continued to stay on the property as an “unlawful detainer” despite being evicted.
King’s lawyer denied these claims, stating, “This is false. [King] has attempted to raise the funds for the back due rent, but claims unavoidable hardship due to the L.A. wildfires and distracted by active litigation… [The custody battle] has been extremely stressful and distracting from her work, which [Irani] is fully aware of in that an eviction would be detrimental to [King’s] custody matter.”
In a statement, King said, “The situation with my landlord was resolved privately…it’s disappointing – but not surprising – to see someone try to exploit this moment for attention. I am currently focused on what matters most: my children.”
The settlement required King move out on March 22, leaving the residence clean.
After being married for 13 years, King filed for divorce from Newman in 2020, and the split was finalized in 2023. Newman filed for sole custody of James and Leo after accusing King of being drunk while watching them.
In the past, King has been open about her deep-seated battle with addiction, which began when she was pushed to do hard drugs as a teenage model.
