Actor Robert Davi Fears Conservative Views Could Keep Him Out of ‘The Goonies’ Sequel: ‘I Hope They Don’t Hold My Politics Against Me’

Robert Davi is eager to reprise his role as Jake Fratelli in the recently announced sequel to The Goonies, but he worries his political views might keep him out.

The actor, 73, expressed his concerns in an interview with Fox Digital, stating that his outspoken conservatism—especially his support for Donald Trump—has cost him jobs in the past.

“I do hope I’m part of it,” Davi said. “I hope that they don’t hold my politics against me and keep me from that project.”

Davi acknowledged that he’s seen his political beliefs impact his career.

“I’m concerned about it, yes,” he admitted. “Because it’s happened on other issues, other projects. And it’s just, you know, I believe in free speech and not being politically correct all the time.”

Warner Bros. and Amblin Entertainment have yet to respond to Davi’s comments.

Despite his concerns, Davi remains proud of his role in the beloved film and noted that fans still reach out to him about it.

[Richard] Donner, the director, originally said when we did the film, he told me, ‘This is going to be like the modern-day Wizard of Oz,’” Davi recalled. “And it’s become that for many, many people. And I get multiple generational families that come up to me and tell me how much they love Goonies and how much they love Jake Fratelli because they put the singing in there.”

Warner Bros. recently confirmed that The Goonies sequel is officially in development. Home Team director Potsy Ponciroli is writing the screenplay, with original producers Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg returning. Lauren Shuler Donner, wife of the late Richard Donner, will serve as executive producer.
