If you’ve been having a dreary week, here’s some uplifting news to restore your faith in humanity. Chris Salvatore, a 31-year-old actor and singer residing in L.A., recently took in his neighbor Norma Cook, 89. Cook had been battling with leukemia, and had been staying in the hospital, with doctors telling her she wouldn’t live past the holidays. Cook has no living family or children.

After Cook’s hospital stay, she needed full-time care when she was at home, which wasn’t covered by her insurance.

Salvatore and Cook had started their friendship five years earlier, when a door knock from Chris led to an immediate connection and talks about life.

Upon learning that Cook couldn’t afford the care she needed, Salvatore started a GoFundMe page for his elderly friend, and raised $50,000 for Cook. However, medical needs quickly drained this supply.

And so, Salvatore invited Cook to move in. The alternative would have been to send her to a nursing home.

Salvatore posts heartwarming photos of him and Cook on Instagram, under the hastag #myneighbornorma.

Happy New Year from Norma and me. She rang in 2017 in style last night! ?? #myneighbornorma

On a recent update, Salvatore wrote:

“I hope this little update will bring some sunshine to your rainy day here in La. We are reaching the 2 month mark since my neighbor Norma has come home from the hospital and I am so happy to share that she is continuing to prove the doctors and nurses wrong by continuing to THRIVE! To prolong the remaining funds to prevent her from having to be moved into a county facility, Norma and I have decided to move her into my apartment across the hall where she now has her own beautiful room and bathroom! She loves it! I do most of my work at home so I am here most of the time to care for her so it only made sense to the both of us. She is my adopted grandmother and I am her grandson she never had. 🙂 We will still have caregivers coming in to care for her as well as her weekly hospice visits from the nurses and doctors. I just wanted to let you all know Norma loves reading your comments and I seriously think all the support and love is keeping her healthy. Now who wants to come to dinner? #myneighbornorma… I mean #myroomatenorma.”

As if that wasn’t sweetness overload, Salvatore also took in Cook’s feline pal, Hermes.

“This news reached the Netherlands and I am officially in love! What a beautiful person you are! Much love for the both of you,” one commenter wrote adoringly.

The pair provide a moving example of how a strong friendship can, quite literally, prolong your life.
