Accused Murderer Jodi Arias Admits To Lying On The Stand

Jodi Arias, who once claimed she had nothing to do with the murder of Jason Alexander, now admits to killing him.

Arias gave testimony last week that she killed her boyfriend Alexander in an act of self-defense. She claimed that he had gotten aggressive and began chasing her throughout the house, causing her to seek out the gun that eventually killed him. When pressed as to why she lied initially to authorities about Alexander's death, Arias asserted that she hadn’t wanted her parents to hear her say she had murdered him.

Although Arias has copped to having fired the bullets and wielding the knife that killed Alexander, she maintains her innocence. "You truly believe that you didn't do anything wrong here?" the prosecutor Juan Martinez asked her.

"I believed that I knew that I was not guilty of first-degree murder and I did plan to be dead," she replied, referencing her earlier suicide plans.

Martinez also pursued a line of questioning revolving the abuse Arias alleges she suffered at the hands of Alexander. "This entry does not corroborate what you told us happened in the car," said Martinez, referring to a day in 2008 Arias claims Alexander hit her in the neck while they were driving. "With regard to the (choking incident) you didn't call police. You didn't tell anyone about it. There is no corroboration anywhere in your journal. All we have is your word. Are there photos? Any other writings? Is there a police report? Is there a medical report?"

When Arias tried to claim that she told another ex-boyfriend, Matthew McCartney, about the abuse, she noticeably fumbled with her story. First she alleged McCartney saw the bruises, and then she referred to a phone call, which the prosecution noted would not have shown McCartney the supposed bruises.

“No, I was in Yreka [California] by then. I stopped to see Matt after I left Arizona. Let's see, I believe it was two or three days after. I'm not saying there was no telephone call, [but] it was at his house,” she offered, trying to recover. “I went and saw Matt, and some make-up wore off, and he confronted me on [the bruises]."

McCartney denies ever seeing the bruises or conversing with Arias about them, according to the prosecution — making it conceivable that the accused is once again lying under oath. Martinez’ first question put to Arias today was, “Ma’am, you have a problem with telling the truth, don’t you?” Her response? “Not typically.”—Chelsea Regan
